"STOP Everything for Humanics" - Reflections on Humanics - Nov 13, 1997

This column, titled “STOP Everything for Humanics,” is part of a series of reflections written by Springfield College’s Distinguished Professor of Humanics Joel Dearing on November 13, 1997.Dearing was Springfield College’s Distinguished Professor of Humanics during the 1997-1998 academic year. During this time, he started a weekly column in the Springfield Student newspaper called, “Reflections on Humanics.” In his column from the week of November 13, 1997, Dearing starts by stating that this is the third and final column in a series on team building. Just like his volleyball team, he views Springfield College as a team that has had a lot of success for well over one hundred years. He goes on to state that the reason our Springfield College team is known so well throughout the US is because of our college’s philosophy. Dearing states that we need to continue to encourage every member of the SC team to investigate, reflect upon, embrace, adopt, and personalize the Humanics Philosophy. He says what our college needs is unity. To do this, he claims teams need to stop everything, get out of the gym, delay practice, and take a day to focus on team unity. Dearing says you can’t build an effective team unless every member of the team comes together and focus on what the team is all about. Dearing ends this reflection by summarizing his plans for a STOP EVERYTHING for HUMANICS day, which would later come to be a part of his plans for Humanics in Action day for the fall of 1998. Dearing earned his BS from Springfield College in 1979 and taught as an associate professor of Physical Education at the college. Dearing also coached women’s volleyball for 22 seasons (1989-2010). He finished his career with a win-loss record of 595-196 and a .752 winning percentage. Dearing was the recipient of several different Coach of the Year honors throughout the years
